Matei is eleven years old and lives together with his grandfather in Romania. His parents are in Italy to earn money. The grandchild and grandfather get along well, they respect each other and are close. But because of a trick Matei plays he is suspended from school and his grandfather gets angry with him and hits him.
After this incident Matei leaves his home and only returns shortly before his grandfather’s death. He ends up in an orphanage, from which his mother wants to take him and bring him to Italy. He refuses to go with his estranged parents and instead decides to follow the footsteps of his grandfather.
Alexandra Gulea was born in 1970 in Bucharest, in Romania. She studied art at the “Academia de Arta” in Bucharest before she graduated in Paris. Afterwards she spent time on studying documentary film in HFF Munich. Her films have been shown in numerous festivals like International Short Film Days Oberhausen, Cinema du Reel Paris, IDFF Munich and won several awards.
