What does a caravan mean for us today? Where does she come from and where does she go? Who goes there at all? Why all this driving?
In our workshop, we worked together with an international group of 16 young people with today's caravans. with how you are "on the move" today. Based on routes, means of transport and the most diverse travel occasions, we questioned forms of all mobility that lead people from one place to another. We were interested in who moves around the world, why and how "being on the move" affects people's lives. We ask: how do we deal with the "strangers"? How do we define ourselves and the "others"? How do we perceive the strange place?
Based on our research scenes were created, which we then processed in small animations. But we were inspired by the origins of the film, that is, by the first apparatuses that created moving images: the Zoetrop, the Taumatop, the Laterna Magica and the flip book. We experimented with these "antique" still cinematographic devices and created various animations. There were pens, cardboard, optical lenses, scissors and ruler as hand tools as computer and camera. We let ourselves be guided by the magic of moving images and take the technical basics of the beginnings into the future of the media world.

The workshop took place in Summer 2014 in Izmir as part of the project "Caravan into the future" SOE summer camp and was initiated by the Goethe Institut Ankara
Can Sungu studied film and visual communication design in Istanbul and at the Institute for Art in Context at the Berlin University of the Arts. He has given workshops and seminars in the field of film and published texts on film and migration. As an artist, he participated in numerous exhibitions, including at MMSU Rijeka, Künstlerhaus Vienna and REDCAT Los Angeles. He is co-founder and artistic director of bi‘bak.
Malve Lippmann studied at the State Academy of Fine Arts Stuttgart and at the Institute for Art in Context (UdK) in Berlin. As a freelance stage designer and artist, she has been internationally responsible for the design of numerous performances, opera- and theatre productions. Since 2010, Malve Lippmann has been working as a curator and cultural manager, leading artistic workshops and seminars and is active in various cultural- and community projects. She is co-founder and artistic director of bi'bak and SİNEMA TRANSTOPIA.
